Listening doesn't get much better than the newest Maisie Dobbs mystery performed by the series's longtime narrator, Orlagh Cassidy. She brings pristine pacing and a deep understanding of the regular characters combined with an ever-fresh perspective on new characters and the action. The book begins in London at the start of WWII, amid sandbagged buildings and the departure of the city's children to the safety of the countryside. Maisie agrees to investigate the murder of a WWI Belgian refugee who had settled in England. All is not as it seems, and complications ensue, including those of the heart as Maisie helps a lost young evacuee. This is an excellent series and a listening experience that is pure pleasure. It's September 3, 1939, and Britain has officially declared war on Germany. While the country tries to come to terms with another war, Maisie Dobbs is asked to find the killer of a refugee from Belgium. The audio opens with grand music that perfectly sets the tone and era before the text even begins. Cassidy narrates this thirteenth book in the series with a wide range of accents and dialects that provides the international feel necessary of a work that is as much a crime novel as it is a picture of war-torn Europe. The book contains historic, military, and foreign terms, and Cassidy's correct and clear pronunciation is a nice enhancement of the written text. Historical-fiction and Winspear fans will not be disappointed with this newest installment, although to best appreciate this work, new readers may want to consider starting from the beginning of the series.
