Set in a real-life South Dakota town soon after the massacre of General George Armstrong Custer's troops at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876, HBO's Deadwood is a remarkable series chronicling the slow evolution of a lawless community (not even a part of the U.S. at the time) into something vaguely resembling civilization. A magnet for gold prospectors, startup businesses, gamblers, fools, fading legends, and fugitives, Deadwood is a mucky, dangerous melting pot harboring, among others: former Montana lawman Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) and his new hardware trade partner Sol Star (John Hawkes); a doctor and shattered veteran of the Civil War (Brad Dourif); Wild Bill Hickok (Keith Carradine) and two of his friends--the coarse angel Calamity Jane (Robin Weigert) and Hickok's unofficial guardian, Tom Nuttall (Leon Rippy); the drug-addicted widow (Molly Parker) of a murdered aristocrat; and a prostitute (Paula Malcomson) seemingly stuck in the town despite opportunities to escape. Overshadowing them all is a blood-soaked despot, Al Swearengen (Golden Globe-winner Ian McShane), one of the most interesting villains to grace the small screen in years; outwardly a saloon owner, Al is really a brilliant, ruthless businessman who has his hand in everything. The brainchild of former NYPD Blue head writer David Milch, Deadwood boasts artful and thrilling (not to mention profanity-laced) dialogue, actors who are doing their best work in years, and gritty visuals that reinvent the look and feel of the Western genre. Collecting all 12 first-season (2004) episodes, this handsomely boxed DVD set also includes featurettes on "Making Deadwood," "The Real Deadwood," and an interview with Milch conducted by Carradine. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. (T. Keogh) Copyright Video Librarian Reviews 2005.
